It’s the little things that matter . . . A cherished recipe passed on from your grandmother, watching your child experiment with finger paint for the first time, a special dessert your family begs you to make over and over, or making time to squish play dough with your toddler.

Sensory Play

Allow your child to experiment with some common household items. Put a sensory item listed below into a container and add props. Children will sift, pour, scoop, dig, and stir for hours.

Containers - dish washing pan, cookie sheet, cake pan, Rubbermaid containers, shoe box, small buckets.

Items to fill - rice, macaroni, packing peanuts, shredded paper, snow, oatmeal, instant mashed potatoes, sudsy water, shaving cream, dry beans, indian corn, colored water, fall leaves.

Use a mat to minimize messes - shower curtain liner, bath towels, bed sheet, infant drop cloth, or put kids in plastic blow up pool.

Props to play with - funnels, bowls, cups, sieve, measuring spoons, measuring cups, spoons, ladles,  comb, small rake, scissors, kitchen gadgets, squirt bottles, magnify glass, toy cars, objects to find in the material such as marbles or small animals, items that sink and float in water.
