About Lisa Oppenheimer

As a writer and mom, Lisa Oppenheimer has been lucky enough to make a career combining the two things she loves most: family and travel.

Wandering the planet with her husband and two daughters has led her to fully appreciate both the challenges and the joys of family adventuring. Her most important piece of advice: remember, it's a vacation, not a job.

In addition to articles for Fodors, Parenting, Family Fun, Nick Jr. and Family Fun Magazines, Lisa has written several books on travel, including two for Fodor's "Around the City with Kids" series.

Vicky and Jen's 10 Tight Wad Tips

• Check with the hotel desk as to service charges when making telephone calls from your room.

• Always check with your cell phone provider to see what roaming fees may apply.

• Buy souvenirs at grocery stores instead of expensive gift shops that attract tourists. Easily packable, local specialty foods make great gifts for family and friends at home.

• If you own a gas-guzzling vehicle, try swapping with a friend or relative who has a gas-efficient auto. Ensure that the insurance policies are in order before you leave, remember to check tire pressures, pack light, and use the cruise control while you drive.

• Plan a trip during off-season and ask for specials.

• Camping is a great vacation bargain in itself, but you can also use a campground as simply a place to shower and sleep. The cost is a lot less than is a hotel room.

• Travel with a cooler that has wheels and a pull handle. Keep it stocked with drinks and snacks. When the trip is over, use it to bring back souvenirs or clothes.

• Skip the airport food and drinks, room service, commercial photographs and expensive bus tours. These items usually aren't worth the extra expense.

• Do splurge on a good digital camera and comfortable walking shoes!

• Have a picnic. Bring an expandable tote bag and purchase food at local grocery stores. Your breakfasts and picnic lunches will be healthier, tastier, fresher, and much cheaper than their restaurant counterparts.

Final Travel Tip

A good security measure is to wrap your wallet with a rubber band (or two) to make it harder for pickpockets to remove it from your clothes pocket without detection!
