About Emily Rempe & Susan Dineen

Susan Dineen and Emily Rempe are a dynamic mother-daughter team. Their vision to provide families with enriching activities in a convenient format has become a reality in Productive Parenting.

Fueled by her interest in searching for easily accessible and creative activities to engage with her 18 month old daughter, Emily approached Susan in the fall of 2005 with the idea of a professionally developed website that would share the expertise of educators with parents. Through their conversations, it became apparent why a resource for parents to access activities for their children was needed.

When Susan and her contemporaries graduated from college, most had earned degrees in education, which provided a natural overflow of ideas on how to interact with children.

When Emily and her peers graduated from college, they had earned degrees in business, medicine, law, and a variety of fields that did not always translate into feelings of resourcefulness as a parent. Upon continued discussions, their shared vision of Productive Parenting was born. Read Full Bio

Journal Writing

Target Age:
Late Four-Year Old

Materials You Will Need: notebook

What To Do: Introduce your child to journaling by having a special book or notebook on the night stand. Encourage your child to decorate the cover with pictures cut out of a magazine or a personal drawing. Every night encourage your child to dictate  favorite memories of the day. Write them down exactly as your child speaks. This will become a special book for you and your child to read when older!

Variations: Have your child illustrate each entry.

Clapping Rhythms

Target Age: Early Three-Year Old

What To Do: Following directions is an important skill for your child. Ask your child to listen very carefully to what you do. Clap a simple rhythm. Encourage your child to clap the same rhythm. Repeat the rhythm if your child seems unsure of what to do. If your child is successful, make your rhythms more complex. This is a great activity to try when stuck in traffic!

Phone Conversations

Target Age: Middle Two-Year Old

Materials You Will Need: two toy phones or disconnected phones

What To Do: Your child has seen and heard you on the phone many times. Now may be the time to let your child have a conversation with you on the phone! Dial your home number. Say it out loud as you dial. Talk to your child. Give your child time to talk to you. Show your child how to dial the home number. Keep the phones on the toy shelf for playtime.

Variations: Perhaps you could call another family member on your real phone. Observe what your child does. This social skill will take time to develop.

My Home Book

Target Age: Early Two-Year Old

Materials You Will Need: album book, photos

What To Do: Children enjoy seeing books with familiar pictures. Today try taking photos of each room in your home including the activities your child enjoys doing in each room. Remember to put the photo on the left side of the book and the text on the right side. This helps your child become accustomed to looking from left to right, (which is necessary when reading). Read the book to your child, "MY HOME." "This is Emily's room." "Emily loves to rock in the rocking chair." Continue if your child is interested.

Where Did It Go?

Target Age: Middle Infant

What To Do: Play 'Hide and Seek' with toys today! Gather together five of your child's favorite toys. Place your child on a blanket. Hide the five toys under another blanket. Pull out one toy at a time. Say, "I found the big red ball!" Put it back under the blanket. "Where did the ball go?" Pull it out again. "Here is the big red ball!" Repeat the activity with other toys. See if your child can find the toys.
