About The Meal Makeover Moms

Janice, the mother of two girls, and Liz, the mom of two boys, understand, through years of personal experience, the daily challenges parents face when mealtime rolls around.  That’s why their recipes are all mom tested and kid approved, and their mealtime tips are realistic and practical.  The dietitian duo wants to make a positive impact on the way families eat, so whether you send them an email, attend one of their Meal Makeover Mom Cooking Parties, or run into one of them at the grocery store, you are sure to receive a plateful of ideas and encouragement as you begin your journey to better family nutrition.


Liz Weiss, MS, RD




Liz Weiss is an award-winning broadcast journalist, speaker, spokesperson. For nearly two decades, Liz wrote and reported on nutrition and health for CNN, PBS, The Health Network, Time Life Medical, ABC Boston, Ivanhoe Broadcast News, and Medical News Network.  Currently, she hosts the “Meal Makeovers” cooking segment for Everwell, an informative and entertaining video series which runs in physician waiting rooms nationwide.  For three years, Liz wrote the monthly Meal Makeover column for Nick Jr. Family Magazine and is presently writing for Kiwi Magazine.

Liz is a sought-after cooking instructor, speaker, and consultant.  She has extensive experience as a live television and radio guest. During her career, she has conducted hundreds of live and taped interviews, appearing on NBC’s Today Show, CNN Headline News, CNN Accent Health, the Food Network, FOX News, ABC-Boston, and many more.

Liz has received numerous awards throughout her career.  She was nominated for cable TV’s highly acclaimed ACE Award for Best Educational Series and received the American Heart Association’s Howard Blakeslee Award for health journalism.  During her tenure at CNN, the network was honored with the American Dietetic Association’s prestigious President’s Circle Award for nutrition education.

Weiss is a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the International Association of Culinary Professionals, and the ADA’s Food & Culinary Professionals practice group.  She has been an advocate for healthier school meals in her community and was the driving force behind many positive changes.  She lives in Lexington, Massachusetts with her husband and two sons, ages 13 and nine.


Janice Newell Bissex, MS, RD



Janice Newell Bissex is a speaker, nutrition consultant, spokesperson. Her professional experience includes Nutrition Director for the New England Heart Center in Boston, and Sales Manager for Practorcare, a nutr ition software company.  For four years, Janice was the Nutrition Consultant to the U.S. Senate in Washington, DC, where she worked with U.S. Senators, their spouses, and foodservice personnel.  After leaving the Senate, Janice spent ten years at the Boston Harbor Hotel, consulting with the hotel’s award-winning executive chef and counseling clients at the hotel’s health club.

A resource for local and national media, Janice has appeared on CNN, PBS, New England Cable News, Fox5-DC, Good Day Atlanta, and conducted dozens of live TV interviews nationwide. Janice has completed numerous radio interviews and is a sought-after speaker for conferences and special events, many of which incorporate cooking demonstrations. For three years, Janice wrote the monthly Meal Makeover column for Nick Jr. Family Magazine and is presently writing for Kiwi Magazine.

Janice is an active member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), having served in various capacities including President of the Massachusetts Dietetic Association.  She currently serves on the Nutrition Advisory Boards at Johnson & Wales University and Dunkin Brands and is Nominating Chair of the Food & Culinary Professionals practice group of the ADA. She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and American Institute of Wine & Food. Janice lives in Melrose, Massachusetts with her husband and two daughters, ages 16 and nine.

Pasta Salad: Cook up some pasta (try a whole wheat blend like Barilla Plus) and broccoli florets, drain, and mix with Italian or Caesar salad dressing. Top with your choice of chickpeas, lowfat cheese, sliced or cubed deli meat, olives, cucumbers, and/or diced red bell peppers.

Grape-Nuts Chicken Salad
Makes 4 Servings

12 ounces cooked chicken breast, coarsely chopped
2/3 cup seedless green grapes, quartered
1/3 cup pecans, toasted and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup light canola mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 large whole wheat pitas, halved

1. Combine the chicken, grapes, pecans, mayonnaise, tarragon, salt, and pepper to taste in a large bowl and mix well.

2. Place the chicken mixture into each of the pita halves and serve.

Nutrition Information per Serving: 380 calories, 17g fat (1.5g saturated), 500mg sodium, 26g carbohydrate, 4g fiber, 31g protein

Tuna & Artichoke Panini
Makes 4 servings

One 6-ounce can light or albacore tuna, drained and flaked
One 6-ounce jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup preshredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup prepared olive tapenade
4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
Eight 1/2-inch-thick slices Italian bread (about 5 x 2 ½ inches)

1. Preheat the Panini grill on high heat.

2. Combine the tuna, artichoke hearts, cheese, and olive tapenade in a bowl and set aside.

3. Lightly brush one side of each slice of bread with olive oil. Place 4 slices of bread on the work surface, oiled side down. Divide the tuna mixture evenly between the bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread, oiled side up.

4. Place sandwiches in the Panini press and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Slice each sandwich in half and serve.

Nutrition Information per Serving: 240 calories, 14g fat (3g saturated, 0.2g omega-3), 660mg sodium, 14g carbohydrate, 2g fiber, 17g protein, 15% calcium

Wraps & Roll Ups: Use a whole wheat flour tortilla as your base. Layer with lite cream cheese, lean deli ham, shredded lowfat cheese, and some shredded carrot … or layer with deli turkey, lowfat shredded cheese, a bit of salsa, and sliced avocado.
