Our 8 Favorite Time-Management Strategies
1. Learn to Say NO
Here's a great resource on how to say no: The Book of No by Susan Newman, Ph.D. Use it to create space in your schedule for what's important to you.
2.Stay Organized
Most people don't realize how much time is sucked up (not to mention stress created) by living in an environment where things are unorganized, difficult to find and relaxation is a challenge.
3. Know Yourself
Being aware of your strengths and weaknesses can help you to avoid getting overwhelmed. By knowing your limitations, you avoid taking on too much and eliminate the extra time involved in trying to figure out how to do something. By knowing your strong points, you can sign up for tasks you enjoy and do them more quickly and efficiently.
4. Don't Procrastinate
To break the procrastination habit, get as creative in coming up with ideas of how to get the work done as you are in thinking of reasons not to do it. Planning ahead and having everything you need lined up in order to complete the job will help you reduce the stress caused by it. Instead of looking at the project as one huge job, and being overwhelmed by it, break it up into smaller projects, and set deadlines for each phase.
5.
Prioritize the To-Do's
List tasks you must complete in order of priority (most important to least important). Identify how long will might take to complete each item. Sometimes getting your least favorite jobs done first make for a smoother, more productive day. You can even come up with a "NOT To Do" list to remind you of time-wasters.
6. Follow a Routine
Create and follow a schedule that even includes meals and breaks at regular times. You'll be less likely to goof off when you should be working. Set a timer to keep you on track of your scheduled projects, breaks and work time. Be sure to block out time each day to take a power nap, relax and take a walk to clear your mind and get energized.
7. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
Although it's tempting to work long hours, in the end you're actually less efficient when you're tired.
8. Start the Night Before
Review the things you have to do tomorrow, the evening before. Organize each item in the order that it should be accomplished. Consolidate similar tasks together (i.e, phone calls). Set out clothes. Put items near the door that you need to take with you. Have lunches made. Have directions printed out. Plan your route for errands. You get the point . . . anything you can do to get a head start and make your day run more smoothly.
